In 2025, Eric Ayerboi Tetteh logged into the World Bank Youth Summit from Accra, Ghana — one of thousands of young leaders attending online from across the globe.
When Dr. Shobha Shetty, Global Director for Agriculture and Food at the World Bank, took the virtual stage, her words stopped him cold.
"Agriculture can contribute to poverty reduction three times faster than any other sector. By 2050, we can sustainably feed ten billion people — using technology, better public spending, and unlocking private capital. All of this at a price tag of less than ten percent of global GDP. The youth are at the edge of this action."
For Eric, it wasn't just a speech. It was a revelation.
As a young Ghanaian, he already understood what agriculture meant to his country — one of the largest contributors to Ghana's GDP. But sitting behind his screen that day, something clicked: while every other industry was being transformed by technology — banking, transport, retail, healthcare — agriculture was being left behind. And nowhere was this gap more painful than in the daily struggle of Ghana's farmers.
He closed his laptop and started researching. What he found was alarming.

The average Ghanaian farmer is over 55 years old. An entire generation is ageing out of the fields with no succession plan. Across the continent, young people had turned their backs on farming — not because the opportunity wasn't there, but because agriculture had an image problem. In schools across Ghana, weeding and farm work were handed out as punishment. A generation grew up believing farming was something to escape, not embrace.
Meanwhile, the farmers who remained were struggling desperately. Every planting and harvest season, they scrambled to find enough hands to work their land. Phone calls went unanswered. Middlemen took their cut and disappeared. Workers didn't show up. And crops that took months of sweat and sacrifice to grow rotted in the fields — not because of drought or disease, but simply because there weren't enough workers to harvest them in time.
Across Ghana, an estimated 20–30% of harvests are lost every year to labor shortages and post-harvest mismanagement. Food that could have fed families. Income that could have changed lives. Gone.
On the other side of the same problem, thousands of young people in rural communities needed work. Real work. Fairly paid, dignified work. But no one was connecting them to the farmers who desperately needed them.
The problem was simple. The solution was clear.
